"larry is an excellent, knowledgable teacher"Larry grew up in Middletown, New Jersey and started playing the guitar at the age of 13. By the time he was in high school, he was playing in local rock bands. Upon hearing Wes Montgomery and Pat Martino, he decided to take up serious study of jazz guitar by attending Ithaca College of Music. He received his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Ithaca College, where he studied with guitar great, arranger, and educator par excellance, Steve Brown.
After college, a move to New York City is exactly where Larry learned to “really play through the streets” by becoming part of the burgeoning downtown village seen. He studied privately with Wayne Krantz, Pat Martino, Joanne Brackeen, Kenny Werner, Jack Wilkins, Vic Juris, Larry Coryell, and Mick Goodrick, all the while getting a chance to play with Omer Avital, Avishae Cohen, Daniel Freedman, Oz Noy, Ralph Peterson, Dion Parsons, Ugonna Okegwo, Duane Eubanks, Jay Collins, Grant Stewart, Sasha Perry, Victor Jones, Cliff Barbaro, Big John Patton, and Frank Hewitt.
With an eye towards educating future musicians, Larry is working on his Masters in Music Education at Hunter College. While living in New York, Larry has developed a style of sharped-edged chording, crisply articulated lines, and the seemingly effortless ability to move between the two. His reportoire consists of jazz, blues, funk, rock, fusion, classical, acoustic singer songwriter, and music production.
Students can expect to have a curriculum taylor made to their musical tastes. Let's face it! Most people come to music lessons as an enjoyable hobby. It's a break from their stressfull lives. Music lessons take on a theraputic quality. My job is to facilitate learning of a new skill while making it a highly enjoyable process. Ultimately I teach the student to teach themselves. My function is as a guide through the process.
Effortless Mastery is an approach I've been using with my students.
